Fall 2009: Color Theory 101

This fall there are a lot of fabulous colors emerging that will be with us for the long haul. Here are a few of my hottest picks.

Purple is one of the new must have colors! Deep plum to the palest of lavender is a color that can show both a modern and sophisticated side to any room. It is a flattering color that works with so many others. For example, a master bedroom painted with Benjamin Moore #1445 pale concerto; in a semi gloss finish, will give the walls a glass like appearance. Paired with simple cream silk panels you will feel enveloped with calmness and serenity.

Yellow comforts and invigorates, it can be a fresh take on a timeless color. Whether it is a deep gold grass cloth wall covering in the dining room or a lemon yellow painted stripe in the kitchen. It can give a room a surprising cheery twist!

Duck egg blue is the new "green" soft and ethereal. It is emerging as the transitional color of the future. Paired with pink, it makes any room feel like it has an updated contemporary style. This color looks great everywhere, in a family room or even the twin’s nursery.

Brown is the new black-used as a neutral it can be a powerful backdrop. My favorite brown tone from Benjamin Moore is #hc-69 whitehall brown, it makes a statement without reading dark. I have used this on walls in a powder room to let the antique sepia prints I was working with stand out. It let that make the statement in the room. As quoted by Calvin Klein, brown exudes "iconic minimalism".

Color is making a comeback this fall. Many fabric houses are drawing the inspiration for their designs by searching out texture/color and weaving techniques from all around the world. One of the new collections that I thought was most intriguing was from Lee Jofa, whose designers were drawn to their sketch pads from right outside their offices, New York’s own "NoLita"-North of Little Italy. This is eclecticism at its finest, a must see offering this fall; for a window treatment or even a striking accent pillow, your room will shine with all that’s bright and new.

Be inspired this fall season to bring one or all of these color ideas to your home and see the endless possibilities you can create.
